There are many large cattle stations and mines here, but not many towns. Not many people live and work here.
There are many mines in the Outback, because Australia is rich in minerals. From these mines come iron, lead, gold, silver, salt and sand. Australia also produces coal, natural gas and uranium.
There are gems or precious stones, too, such as diamonds, rubies, quartzes and opals. Opals have many colours, but the black opal is only found in Australia, around an outback town called Lightining Ridge.
