Australia has six states - Western Australia, South Australia, Victoria, Tasmania, New South Wales and Queensland, and two territories - the Northern Territory and the Australian Capital Territory.
Most people in Australia live in cities and large towns, and most of the cities are on the east coast. More than two-thirds of the population live in the three cool and wet south-eastern states - New South Wales, Victoria and Tasmania.
In the other places the population is often less than one person per square kilometre. This part of the continent is very dry and empty. It is known as the Outback. There are no tall forests, but instead the land may be covered with small, low-growing trees and bushes. This is called scrub.
