There are three valleys in Central and Southern Asia: The Indus Valley, The Tigris/Euphrates Valley, and the Huang He Valley. India is a peninsula which looks like an upside down triangle. On the Western shore of India lies the Indian Ocean. It is the warmest ocean of all. This is mainly because the Gulf Stream passes through. Along the western shore of India, there are two port cities. One is the large, modern city of Mumbai (Bombay). The other is another large city called Calcutta. The capital of India is New Delhi. To the north, the Himalayan Mountains provide a natural barrier between India and China. The world's tallest mountain, Mt. Everest, is in the Himalayas. It lies in the small country of Nepal which lies to the northeast of India. There are three main rivers in India. They are the Indus River, the Ganges River and the Brahmaputra River. The Indus river flows 900 miles from the base of the Himalayas to the coast. The Indian people had a strict social plan called the Caste system. There were 4 castes of people. If one tried to rise above his caste, he became and outcaste, or an untouchable.
