For most migrants becoming Australian was not an easy task and life for the first generation was hard. Many were forced to live in hostels and camps the government set up to house the new settlers. Many were alone with little support from other family members. Apart from the suspicion and hostility of some Australians these 'New Australians' had to cope with a new language and come to terms with a society very different from their traditional society and culture in Europe. Many were forced to accept the hardest jobs. Very often those who had qualifications and skills found that they were not recognised and had to take whatever work was available. Migrants provided labour for the economic growth of the 1950s and 1960s and they were usually the first to lose their jobs during hard times.
