When we use the word “sustainable” when we talk about housing, we mean homes that are designed to reduce the overall environmental impact during and after construction in such a way that we can meet the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs. True housing sustainability is made up of many facets, from building materials to the use of renewable energy sources to design that strives for efficiency and harmony with the surrounding environment This is accomplished in the following ways; using energy, water, land, and other resources efficiently. It is also achieved by making sure the health of the people living in the house is protected and that reducing greenhouse gases, pollution, waste and environmental degradation is a high priority. A sustainable house is one that uses energy and material more effectively both in production and operation while polluting and damaging natural systems as little as possible. An energy-efficient home retains the best quality living environment for its occupants living while minimizing the consumption and waste of energy. To summarize, a sustainable house is the result of design philosophy which focuses on increasing the efficiency of resource use; energy, water, and materials, while reducing building impacts on human health and the environment during the building's lifecycle, through better siting, design, construction, operation, maintenance, and removal.
