Olympia in Greece is where the ancient Olympic Games were held every Olympiad (4 years) between 776 BC and 394 AD. Greek youths from far and wide would come to compete against each other. They came to win, for the glory of being crowned with a wreath of olives. The first games consisted of a simple running race but more sports were added with time. Our modern Olympic Games are modelled on the ancient games. The original site of the Olympic Games was eventually destroyed by earthquakes and floods and the ruins lay hidden until they were rediscovered in 1766. Excavations in 1885 revealed the ruins of many buildings and venues including temples, baths, a gymnasium and a stadium. Many of the ruins had stone columns with beautifully caved designs. Among the ruins, archaeologists found sculptures and pieces of pottery. These objects revealed more about the ancient activities that took place at the games. The modern Olympic Flame Ceremony is performed in ancient Olympia at the Temple of Hera. In ancient times, priestesses used the reflection of the sun in a special metal dish to light the flame. The flame was kept alight for the duration of the fames. In modern Olympiads the ceremonial flame is lit at the temple site using the traditional method. The Olympic torch is then lit from this flame before it begins the journey to the city hosting the Games.
