My Grandpa's House
In the afternoon I was looking for my old notebook. But I couldn't find it. At that time, my mom was preparing to leave for the train station. "Yunji, your grandpa will come to our house today. His health is not good and he will stay with us for a few months."
When I heard that, I was worried about him. At the same time, I was relieved. I don't have to go to grandpa's old house this fall.
Every season my family visited grandpa. The green trees and clean air in the country were great. In summer, I could catch fish in the river or lie down on the pyeongsang beside the big tree. In winter, I could skate on the ice outside or make a snowman. But grandpa's house was old and uncomfortable. Most of all, taking a shower was not easy. I honestly didn't like to go there although there were many good things around his house.
When grandpa came home with mom, he looked a little bit sad. I came up to him and asked, "Grandpa, how have you been? You're happy here with us, aren't you?" "Yeah..., Yunji. But I think I miss my house already."
His answer was unexpected. My house was larger, cleaner, and more comfortable. It was much better than his house! "Why do you miss your house, grandpa?" "Yunji, I don't miss the house itself but the memories in it. Your grandma and I used to clean up the house every day. Your dad grew up there. I had many wonderful moments in my life there." "Living in that house was living with those memories."
He took out an old picture from his wallet and showed it to me. In the picture, a young couple and their children were standing in front of a house. Although the house was not great, they looked happy.
"Grandpa, now I understand you. I lost my notebook. My old friend and I used to write our secret letters in it. All our memories were in it and they are lost, too." Grandpa looked at me and said, "You'll find your notebook. I'll help you." We smiled together.
Let's Check
Dear Sena, my friend,
How have you been, Sena? How is your new school? Do you remember our yellow notebook? We used to write our secret letters in it. I lost it last week, but I found it again. My grandfather helped me find it. After I lost it, I came to know it was not just a notebook. Our memories were in it. Although you left, you are still in my mind. Write me soon. Bye.
Your friend, Yunji
