Target Language or Knowledge:

Yesterday Lisa returned to ESL class. She started a new unit on food. We are learning to draw little pictures called ‘icons’ to help us remember the vocabulary words. The first food words we learned can be found in the Produce aisle of the supermarket. Vegetables like: corn, tomatoes, beets, carrots, and garlic. The parts of a vegetable are its peal, stem, root, and leaves. We learned the word perish. To perish means to go bad. A fresh banana is green. A ripe banana is yellow. If left alone for too long, it will perish and turn black. We also are beginning to draw little pictures or icons of each vegetable. We look at a picture of a vegetable, identify its shape, and draw it on a piece of loose leaf paper for our notebooks. The pictures will help us remember the words.
