The Indian Removal Act authorized the removal of all Native Americans who lived east of the Mississippi. The Native Americans would be moved to Indian Territory in Oklahoma. The Bureau of Indian Affairs was set up to manage the removal. Many tribes resisted removal. The Cherokee for example attempted to adopt white culture in order to prevent conflict and avoid removal. They were eventually forced to leave when gold was found on their land in Georgia. The Seminole in Florida resisted removal by force. This lead to the 2nd Seminole War with the U.S.. Eventually 4000 Seminole were removed and 100's were killed. When the U.S. gave up the fight some small groups of Seminole were allowed to remain.
