Student Task. Listen carefully as your teacher reads the paragraphs about the Julio-Claudian Emperors who ruled the Roman Empire from 27BCE to 68BCE,

Target Language or Knowledge:

The Julio-Claudian dynasty (27 BCE–68 BCE) marked the foundational era of the Roman Empire, beginning when Octavian took the title Augustus and established the Pax Romana—a long period of relative internal peace and stability. Augustus transformed Rome from a fractured republic into a centrally governed superpower, securing imperial borders, overhauling the tax system, and famously boasting that he found Rome a city of brick and left it a city of marble. His successor, Tiberius, was a capable military commander who strengthened the empire’s finances and consolidated its frontiers, though his later reign became overshadowed by paranoia, treason trials, and his self-imposed retreat to the island of Capri. The political dynamic shifted drastically under Caligula, whose promising start descended into tyranny, financial excess, and political conflict with the Senate, culminating in his assassination by members of the Praetorian Guard. Stability returned under Claudius, who was elevated to power by the Praetorian Guard and proved to be an effective administrator, modernizing the civil service, building extensive public works like aqueducts, and successfully launching the conquest of Britain in 43 CE. However, the dynasty ended in turmoil during the rule of Nero (54–68 CE). While remembered for his passion for arts, public spectacles, and lavish projects—such as the palatial Domus Aurea built after the catastrophic Great Fire of Rome in 64 CE—his reign sparked deep outrage through political executions, heavy taxation, and the persecution of early Christians. Widespread military revolts across Gaul, Spain, and Rome eventually led the Senate to declare Nero an enemy of the state, and his death by suicide in 68 CE closed Rome's first imperial dynasty and triggered a brief civil war over imperial succession.
