The British military governor of Massachusetts and a general in the war was Thomas Gage. The Boston Massacre took place on March 5, 1770. The Second Continental Congress met in May 1775 after the Battle of Concord and Lexington. This time the congress formed the Continental Army and wrote the Olive Branch Petition. The commanding general of the Continental Army and the first president of the United States was George Washington. Thomas Paine wrote and published a pamphlet during the Revolution called "Common Sense." The Treaty of Paris finally ended the war. It was signed by three American negotiators in France on September 3, 1783.
