Mt Kilimanjaro is the highest peak in Africa at 5 895m. It is located in the Kilimanjaro National Park in the north east of Tanzania near the border with Kenya. It has been a World Heritage Site since 1987 and many people travel to Tanzania to marvel at its beauty. In 1961 the peak was renamed "Uhuru", which means "Freedom Peak" in Swahili. Mt Kilimanjaro is a dormant volcano consisting of three volcanic cones named Kibo, Mawenzi and Shira. Scientists believe that the last eruption occurred between 150 000 and 200 000 years ago. The volcanic craters of Mt Kilimanjaro can easily be seen from the air. The mountain peak is usually covered in glaciers and snow for most of the year. Some fast growing, cold resistant plants survive in the alpine environment. Some scientists are concerned that the glaciers at the mountain's peak are melting. They think it may be evidence of climate change. It is not certain whether these changes are permanently affecting the mountain. Lush forests cover the lower sides of the mountain. The surrounding flat land is savannah, which is home to numerous African animals including elephants. Many people visit Africa to see the wildlife. They think of the African plains as being hot, harsh environments. Mt Kilimanjaro is such a striking contrast to that impression of Africa. It stands alone, snow topped, rising high above the wide expanses that is the savannah.
