The idea that dinosaurs were wiped out by a meteor is just a theory. The process of erosion can create interesting landscapes out of earth and rock. Paleontologists are scientists responsible for finding and excavating prehistoric dinosaur fossils. Experts believe dinosaurs became extinct about 65 million ago at the end of the Cretaceous period. Scientists take specimens when they are out in the field to find out more about something they are studying. The geologists in Kern County study the ground before oil can be safely extracted from it. The remains of prehistoric creatures, called fossils, have been found all over the world, including Kern County. Scientists make educated guesses, called a hypotheses, and then test it to see if it is true. If you want to prove what you say is true you must provide supporting evidence. One way for paleontologists to find fossils is through the extensive excavation of an area.
