Ponyboy was apprehensive about the court date because he was afraid he would be taken away from Darry and Sodapop. The morning was bleak; it was empty, gray and cold. The idea that Johnny and Dally could both be dead was bewildering to Ponyboy; he couldn't believe it. Johnny was burned so badly that he kept flinching from the pain while Dally and Ponyboy spoke with him. Dally robbing the grocery store was his last act of defiance against the police. Ponyboy, Dally, and Johnny tried to act nonchalant in front of Cherry and Marcia at the theater. Randy was involved in the murder of Bob, so his was a disgrace to his family. Steve wanted to fight the Socs because he felt contempt for them; he hated them with all his heart. Sodapop had to walk gingerly into the room so he wouldn't wake up Ponyboy when he was sick. Cherry felt sympathetic towards Ponyboy because she thought he was a good kid. Ponyboy quivered at the thought of being caught by the police; it really scared him. Ponyboy was acquitted from all the charges in the murder of Bob; he was not guilty. Ponyboy was incredulous to the information that Darry was worried about him; he didn't believe it. Johnny and Ponyboy ran into the burning church gallantly to save the children. The greasers were in agony after losing two of their friends. Two-Bit was very sarcastic and was always making jokes.
