Fill the blanks below:
The origin of the town of Ledbury goes back to the _Saxon_ days. The streets are laid out according to a _13th_ century plan.
How did the town of Ledbury start? It all began with a _market_ that was held on the grounds of the local church. Ledbury is on the main thoroughfare between _Hereford_ and _Worcester._ The church was located at the crossroads and when people went to church, they then stayed afterwards at started to _trade_ and sell items like _pots,_ _pans_ and _tools._
In _1138_ AD, the Bishop applied to the King for a licence to hold a regular Sunday market and by _Royal_ _Charter_ the market town of Ledbury was born.
All the plots of land in the town of Ledbury were _leased_ to merchants. _Carpenters,_ _weavers,_ and _goldsmiths_ all leased land from the bishop. The landlord was the _bishop_ and the merchants in Ledbury paid rent of _12_ pence/ year. This meant that the people of Ledbury were _free._ Unlike peasants in the countryside who provided a _service_ of labour to the _Lord_ of the Manor, the town people of Ledbury answered to no one.
