Fill the blanks below:
What happens when a base is added to an acid with universal indicator. The HCl is initially _red_ since [H+ ] is much _greater_ than [OH- ]; the pH is 1-2. As NaOH is added, the OH- start to _neutralise_ some of the H+ . As the pH _increases_ to 3-6, the solution turns _orange_ / yellow and [H+ ] > [OH- ]. Once enough NaOH has been added such that [OH- ] = [H+ ], the UI turns _green_ since all the H+ have been neutralised by the _added_ OH- ions to form _water,_ and the pH equals 7. H+ + OH- → H2O As more NaOH is added, the pH _increases_ to pH 8-11 since [OH- ] > [H+ ], so the UI turns _blue._ As yet more NaOH is added, the pH _increases_ to 12-14 since [OH- ] becomes much _greater_ than [H+ ], so UI turns _purple_
