Only plants can combine light energy from the Sun with raw materials from the environment to make food molecules. For this reason plants are called producers.All animals depend on the life process of nutrition that occurs in green plants. They are consumers.Animals either eat plants (herbivores) or eat other organisms that eat plants (carnivores).A food chain is used to show how food is passed from organism to organism. Food chains always begin with a producer.Plants do not obtain food from the soil, but they do require water and minerals from the soil. The minerals are important for healthy growth.
