3. The bowl of a satellite dish is a type of mirror. Visible light rays pass through it, but microwaves are reflected from it. a. Explain how the shape of the dish helps to concentrate the microwave energy onto the receiver. b. If the dish were made out of metal sheet instead of mesh, it could potentially reflect sunlight and cause problems. Explain why. (c) Explain why visible light can pass through the mesh of the dish but microwaves cannot. Refer to the wavelength and Electromagnetic Radiation in your answer.
(a) Microwave rays are reflected back into the _focus_ - it is a _converging_ _mirror_ b. because the _light_ would be _reflected_ onto the receiver and _overheat_ or cook it c. _light_ waves are _small_ enough to _pass_ through the _gaps_ in the mesh, but _microwaves_ are much bigger so they can't 'see' the _holes_ in the mesh and it acts like a solid _mirror_
On the left is a photo of another type of curved mirror. a. Name this type of mirror.
This is a _convex_ mirror not a _concave_ mirror.
Concave mirrors are used as rear view mirrors in cars because (i) they have a wide field of view (ii) the image is always virtual (iii) the image is always diminished (iv) the image is always erect Which of these reasons is/are correct?
(i) and (iv)
Identify the parts of the eye labelled P and Q in the diagram.
P = iris, Q = cornea
Match the pairs below:he human eye as shown in the diagram below has several labeled features.
A → Lens, B → cornea , C → iris, D → retina, E → optic nerve
Explain why part C expands and contracts in different light conditions
to change the _size_ of the _pupil_ and let in more _light_ when it is dark or less _light_ when it is very bright and _depending_ on how bright it is
What is the job of part E?
carry the _signals_ to the _brain_ it does not have any _light_ sensitive _cells_ and so you cannot _see_ with this part of the _eye._
Match the pairs below:
Define refraction → bending of light from one medium to another, Define dispersion → refraction of different colours by different amounts , Define spectrum → a range of colours or wavelengths, Define white light → a mixture of all the visible colours
Name the main type of energy shown
Elastic potential
Name the main type of energy shown
Thermal
Name the main type of energy shown
Chemical potential
Energy can be transformed or transferred. Explain what the difference is between these two
Energy _transfer_ is when energy is _moved_ from _one_ place or _thing_ to another without _changing_ _form,_ transformation is when it changes from one _sort_ to _another_
In a class experiment, a heavy mass is suspended from he roof with string. Students then take turns to hold the weight in front of their face and let it go. Their science teacher tells them that, provided they hold still, the mass cannot hit them in the face when it swings back. why is true.
The energy is _transforming_ from _gravitational_potential_ to _kinetic_energy_ and back again as the mass swings It can't swing back to a _higher_point_ than it started from because that would require extra _energy_ for the greater amount of gravitational _energy_ - this would break the law of _conservation_ The law of conservat_on of energy states that _energy_cannot_be_created_or_destroyed_ but only _transferred_ or transformed/the total amount of energy in a system must remain _constant_
