After the intense brinkmanship of the Cuban Missile Crisis, the Cold War transitioned into a period known as Détente, characterized by a deliberate effort to ease tensions and avoid nuclear catastrophe. This era saw landmark diplomatic achievements, most notably the Strategic Arms Limitation Talks (SALT I and II), which sought to curb the buildup of intercontinental ballistic missiles. The 1975 Helsinki Accords furthered this stability by recognizing post-WWII European borders and promoting human rights, creating a brief window of relative predictability between the superpowers.

However, this thaw cooled rapidly toward the end of the 1970s. The 1979 Soviet invasion of Afghanistan effectively killed Détente, leading to a U.S. grain embargo and a boycott of the 1980 Moscow Olympics. Simultaneously, the Iranian Revolution and the subsequent hostage crisis destabilized the Middle East, fundamentally shifting global power dynamics and contributing to a sense of American vulnerability. These compounding crises, alongside a perceived decline in U.S. military prestige, paved the way for the 1980 election of Ronald Reagan, who promised a more assertive, confrontational stance against the Soviet Union, marking the start of what many call the "Second Cold War."
